Flin Flon Tournament Oct 9/10
Coaches Janel Pearson and Erik Nasselquist
The Tournament
-Creighton Sr. Boys had their 3rd tournament of the year, hosted by neighbouring town
Flin Flon.
-The pre-zone tournament was strictly round robin and included teams from Flin Flon,
The Pas, Cross Lake and Thompson.
-It was great to see a lot of support for the sr. boys this weekend in the form of
parents, friends and teachers.
-Creighton Kodiaks placed 3rd overall, with a record of 5 wins 3 losses, which was a
little disappointing. Mrs. Pearson was expecting the team to finish in the top two.
The boys have a bad habit of starting slow and getting better as the tournament goes on.
This tournament forced the teams to perform well from start to finish.
-It is important to play your best right out of the chute in a tournament of this type.
I hope that the lack of a semi-finals/finals round has shown the boys how important it
is to be consistent all the way through, as we travel to Melfort next weekend for our
4th tournament.
The Grade 10's
-We have a great core of grade 10 players: Kyle Storey (setter), Carson Mackonka (middle),
Keegan Eastman (Right Side) and Darcy Rothlander (Middle/Right), who were really solid
for us this weekend. They have been getting valuable court time and gaining confidence
over the past three weeks.
-We see different strengths and weaknesses in our younger players; some do not like to
start, some get frustrated with little mistakes and have trouble shaking it off, and
thers get nervous when it is a close game at the end, but they have all been working hard
and proving to us that they belong on the court.
The Future
-It was nice to be able to have our whole team with us at the Flin Flon tournament
because when we go back on the road next weekend we have to limit our numbers.
-Next weekend we go to Melfort, which will be an excellent tournament. The boys were
there last year and got to see a great mix of teams.
-We need to focus on staying on our toes for our next tournament. Playing our positions
defensively and hitting the floor is extremely important part of the game that we need
to work on. More often than not, it is a tip or a dump that hits the floor rather than
a big hit from an opposing team.
-We can not expect the ball to come right to us and one can not look to the person beside
them and expect them to get it if they did not. We will need to add aggressiveness to
our defence as we’ve used it in our offence if we want it to all come together.
